The most common signs are noise (squealing, grinding), feel (soft or pulsing pedal), and behavior (the car pulling to one side, or taking longer to stop). Any one of those — bring it in for an inspection. Brake problems get worse fast, and waiting usually turns a small repair into a bigger one.
At least once a year, or every 12,000 to 15,000 miles — whichever comes first. Most drivers don't need a full brake service that often, but a quick inspection catches wear before it becomes a safety issue. We check brakes for free with every oil change, so most customers stay on top of it that way.
It depends on what your vehicle needs. A typical brake pad replacement covers the pads themselves plus inspection of the rotors, calipers, hardware, and brake fluid. If rotors are worn or warped, we'll let you know — and we never replace a part that doesn't need replacing. Full brake rebuilds (pads, rotors, calipers, lines, master cylinder) are less common but well within what we do.
Squealing usually means one of three things: worn brake pads (the wear indicator is making contact with the rotor, which is your built-in warning), glazed pads from heat buildup, or simply dust and debris. The only way to know which is an inspection — bring it in and we'll diagnose it on the spot.
Brake pads typically last 30,000 to 70,000 miles depending on driving style, vehicle weight, and the type of pads installed. Aggressive drivers and city drivers (more stop-and-go) wear pads faster than highway drivers. The wear indicator — a small metal tab built into most pads — starts to squeal when pads are getting low. That's your built-in warning.
Brake pads are the friction material that clamps onto the brake rotor (the spinning disc behind your wheel) to slow the car down. Pads wear out as you use them and are typically replaced more often. Rotors last longer but can warp from heat or wear unevenly over time. A typical brake job replaces pads; rotors are resurfaced or replaced only when their condition warrants it.
Most brake pad replacements take 1 to 2 hours. A full brake job (pads plus rotors and minor hardware) typically takes 2 to 3 hours. More involved repairs — calipers, brake lines, ABS — depend on the diagnosis. We'll give you a clear time estimate up-front when we quote the work.
Not if the wear is significant. Worn pads compromise stopping distance, and metal-on-metal grinding damages rotors and reduces your ability to stop in an emergency. If you're hearing grinding or the pedal feels off, get it inspected before you drive much further. We can usually fit brake emergencies in same-day — call the shop nearest you.
