Wayne's Auto Repair has been the central Ohio transmission shop for drivers since 1999. Whether your car's slipping out of gear, shifting hard, or refusing to move at all, our ASE-certified technicians handle the full range of transmission repair — with up-front pricing and same-day diagnostics when we can. Searching for a transmission shop near you? You've found the right one.
We cover the full transmission picture in-house: diagnostics, transmission repair, rebuild, and replacement for both automatic and manual transmissions, plus clutch service, fluid flushes, and transmission fluid changes. Transmission work has a reputation for sticker shock for a reason — we start every job with a thorough diagnostic so we know what's actually wrong, and we walk you through the findings (and the options) before any major work begins. If a smaller repair will do the job, we'll tell you up-front.
Find Wayne's at three convenient locations across central Ohio: Columbus, Westerville, and Powell. All three shops are part of the Alpha Automotive family — a network of trusted Ohio repair shops backed by decades of community service.
Transmission problems usually get worse fast — and catching them early can be the difference between a fluid flush and a full rebuild. If your vehicle is showing any of these signs, schedule a transmission diagnostic right away:
The most common signs are slipping (revving without acceleration), hard or delayed shifts, grinding or shuddering during gear changes, a burning smell, and red fluid leaking from the car. Any of those — bring it in for a diagnostic. Transmission issues rarely resolve on their own, and waiting can turn a small fix into a full rebuild.
Often, yes. A lot of what looks like a major transmission problem is actually low fluid, a leaking seal, a worn solenoid, a bad sensor, or a torque converter issue — all of which are repairable without tearing the transmission apart. That's why we always diagnose before quoting. Sometimes a rebuild really is the right call, but it's not the first answer to every transmission problem.
Transmission repair fixes specific components — seals, solenoids, sensors, the torque converter, the valve body. Transmission rebuild means disassembling the transmission, replacing worn internal parts (clutches, bands, bearings, seals), and reassembling it. Transmission replacement means installing a new, remanufactured, or used transmission in place of the existing one. We help you understand which path makes sense for your vehicle and your budget.
Yes — both. We handle repair, rebuild, and replacement on automatic transmissions (traditional, CVT, dual-clutch) and full clutch service on manuals. No outside referrals.
It depends on your vehicle. Most automatics call for a transmission fluid change every 30,000 to 60,000 miles; some newer vehicles claim "lifetime" fluid but still benefit from service. Manual transmissions typically go longer between fluid changes. Your owner's manual is the best guide. If you're not sure where you stand, bring it in and we'll check it for you.
A fluid change drains and replaces what comes out — usually about half the total fluid. A transmission flush uses a machine to circulate fresh fluid through the entire system, pushing out the old fluid and any built-up debris. Flushes are more thorough; fluid changes are quicker and less expensive. The right one depends on the condition of your fluid and your vehicle's age. We'll recommend based on what we see.
Yes. We handle full clutch replacement on manual transmissions — pressure plate, clutch disc, throwout bearing, and pilot bearing where applicable. If your clutch is slipping, sticking, or making noise, bring it in and we'll diagnose what needs replacing.
Diagnostics typically take 1 to 2 hours. Fluid services and smaller repairs (sensors, solenoids, leaks) often run a half-day to a full day. Transmission rebuilds and replacements are multi-day jobs — usually 2 to 4 days, depending on parts availability and the specific transmission. We'll give you a clear time estimate up-front when we quote the work.
Appointments help us schedule diagnostic and repair time efficiently — request one online or call the shop nearest you. If your vehicle won't shift into gear or shouldn't be driven, let us know when you call and we'll work you in. We offer free local towing when the repair is done at Wayne's.
